By the numbers, Wesley Chapel families have a lot working in their favor when it comes to public education. Area schools collectively post a 58 percent proficiency rate in both math and reading on state assessments, clearing the Florida public school average of 52 percent in each subject. The community’s average campus ranking sits at 7 out of 10, placing it firmly in the upper half statewide.

That said, the picture shifts considerably from one campus to the next. Some schools are delivering results that rival the best in the state, while others face challenges that call for greater attention and resources. Here’s a detailed look at where things stand.

A Note on Data Sources

Proficiency figures in this report are drawn primarily from Niche, U.S. News, and Public School Review, all of which reference Florida Department of Education test data. Because each platform applies slightly different methodologies and data years, numbers can vary between sources. Where a meaningful discrepancy exists, it is noted.

Elementary Schools: The Full Landscape

Wesley Chapel is home to eight zoned public elementary schools, plus two border-area campuses — Chester W. Taylor Jr. Elementary and Quail Hollow Elementary — that serve portions of the Wesley Chapel community. Performance ranges dramatically, from some of the strongest elementary results in Pasco County to campuses that fall well below statewide benchmarks.

The Standouts

Seven Oaks Elementary leads the pack with 70 percent math proficiency and 65 percent in reading, earning a GreatSchools score of 9 out of 10 and a Niche grade of B+. The campus holds the highest composite score of any Wesley Chapel school on MySchoolScout at 7.1 out of 10. Families in the surrounding neighborhood frequently point to the tight-knit community atmosphere and walkable access as additional draws.

Wesley Chapel Elementary, the community’s namesake campus on Wells Road, is another top performer that deserves attention. The school posts 68 percent math proficiency and 65 percent reading proficiency — numbers that place it right alongside Seven Oaks among the area’s best. Niche gives it a B+ and GreatSchools rates it 7 out of 10. The campus also houses a Center for Gifted Studies.

Wesley Chapel Elementary and Seven Oaks Elementary both clear 65 percent in math and reading — placing them among the strongest elementary campuses in all of Pasco County.

Sand Pine Elementary, with roughly 519 students, has emerged as one of the area’s quieter success stories. The campus posts 63 percent math proficiency and 59 percent reading proficiency. Sand Pine earned a coveted A from the Florida Department of Education for the 2024–25 school year — its first ever.

Solid Middle Ground

Wiregrass Elementary, one of the larger campuses locally with roughly 1,000 students, posts 59 percent math proficiency and 65 percent reading, both above state averages. It’s also the only elementary school in the Pasco County district to offer a band program, and its feeder pattern into Dr. John Long Middle and Wiregrass Ranch High gives east-side families a strong K–12 pipeline.

Veterans Elementary, located on Progress Parkway with approximately 706 students, posts 58 percent math proficiency and solid reading numbers according to Niche. The school earned a B from the Florida DOE for 2024–25 after improving from a C. GreatSchools rates it 5 out of 10.

Double Branch Elementary (857 students) also moved up to a state B grade in 2024–25. Quail Hollow Elementary (569 students), near the Wesley Chapel–Zephyrhills border, similarly improved from a C to a B, though its math proficiency of 41 percent (per U.S. News) still trails the state average.

Where More Support Is Needed

Why This Matters

Several Wesley Chapel–area elementary schools post proficiency rates well below state averages. The struggles at these campuses aren’t a reflection of individual teachers or families — but they do highlight where targeted investment could make the biggest difference.

Watergrass Elementary (939 students) slipped from a B to a C in the 2024–25 state grading cycle, with 54 percent math proficiency. New River Elementary (808 students) dropped from a C to a D, posting just 42 percent math proficiency and 47 percent reading. And Chester W. Taylor Jr. Elementary, near the Zephyrhills border, remains the most challenged campus in the area with just 38 percent math and 40 percent reading proficiency, plus a GreatSchools rating of 1 out of 10.

Middle Schools

Wesley Chapel is served by three public middle school campuses, each drawing from different feeder zones and producing notably different outcomes.

Dr. John Long Middle School

No conversation about Wesley Chapel academics starts anywhere other than Dr. John Long Middle School. The campus ranks in the top 20 percent of all Florida public schools and reaches an even more impressive tier in math, where its 82 percent proficiency rate places it in the top 5 percent statewide. Reading proficiency sits at 60 percent according to U.S. News, well ahead of both district and state marks. (Some rating platforms, including Niche, report the reading figure as high as 71 percent, depending on the data set and methodology used.)

Thomas E. Weightman Middle School

Math proficiency sits at 54 percent, while reading comes in at 51 percent — with the reading figure dipping slightly below the statewide mark. While its 96 percent Algebra 1 end-of-course proficiency rate is a genuine bright spot, the overall picture is mixed, and parent reviews across Niche and GreatSchools are sharply divided.

Charter and Specialty Schools

Several charter and specialty campuses round out Wesley Chapel’s educational options. Pinecrest Academy Wesley Chapel (K–8 plus a small high school program, approximately 1,259 students) holds a Niche grade of A− and earned an A from the Florida DOE, with 72 percent math proficiency and 70 percent reading — among the highest in the entire Wesley Chapel area.

Union Park Charter Academy (803 students, K–8) offers Cambridge International curriculum and earned a state A grade. Kirkland Ranch Academy of Innovation, a career-focused high school, also picked up a state A and ranks in the top 15 percent of Florida high schools on SchoolDigger. Central Montessori Charter School provides an alternative instructional model for families seeking a Montessori approach.

Putting the Numbers in Perspective

Ratings from sources like Niche, GreatSchools, U.S. News, and Public School Review each rely on slightly different methodologies, so figures can shift depending on where families look. The most consistent baseline comes from state proficiency data tied to the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) and End-of-Course exams, which are standardized across every public school in Florida.

Wesley Chapel’s 58 percent average proficiency rate in math and reading outpaces the statewide public school average of 52 percent in both subjects.

Wesley Chapel’s rapid residential expansion over the past decade has created both opportunities and growing pains for local schools. Enrollment has surged by double digits at multiple campuses in recent years, pushing the Pasco County School District to continually adjust attendance boundaries and invest in new facilities.

Growth & Equity

The high-performing campuses — Dr. John Long, Seven Oaks, Wesley Chapel Elementary, Sand Pine, Wiregrass Elementary, and Wiregrass Ranch among them — demonstrate that this community can produce academic results that compete with the best in the state. At the same time, schools like Chester W. Taylor Jr. Elementary, New River Elementary, and to a lesser extent Weightman Middle serve as a reminder that sustained growth needs to be paired with equitable support in every corner of the community.
