History
Wesley Chapel's story begins long before Florida was a state. Native American habitation in the area dates back roughly 10,000 years. European settlement arrived in the 1840s when pioneer families — the Boyettes, Gillettes, Godwins, and Kerseys — received land grants in what was then Hernando County.
Originally called "Double Branch" for its twin creeks (and "Gatorville" by locals), the community took the name Wesley Chapel from the Methodist church at SR 54 and Boyette Road, itself named for John Wesley, founder of Methodism. The name appears in county school records as early as 1877.
By the late 1800s, Wesley Chapel had its own post office, two sawmills, and a general store. Residents earned their living through lumber, turpentine, citrus, and cattle — and, as local legend tells, the occasional moonshine still.
For most of the 20th century, the area stayed rural. The transformation began in the late 1990s as Tampa's growth pushed north along I-75. Master-planned communities like Meadow Pointe (1992) broke ground, and by the 2000s Wesley Chapel had become Pasco County's growth engine. It remains unincorporated — governed by the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners.

Wesley Chapel grows at 4-6% annually, consistently outpacing Florida and U.S. averages. Pasco County is projected to hit 715,000 by 2030 and 766,000 by 2035.
