One Bondsman Critical, Two Deputies Hurt After Wesley Chapel Apartment Gunfire, Suspect Dies

A bail bondsman is in critical condition and two Pasco County deputies were treated for minor injuries after a wanted man opened fire on them early Thursday at the Enclave at Wesley Chapel apartment complex, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said. The suspect died from what deputies believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff that ended with pepperball gas and a drone search inside the unit.

Sheriff Nocco identified the suspect as 29-year-old Henry Josena, who had missed a court date on lewd and lascivious charges out of Hillsborough County. Three bail bondsmen went to the complex around 12:58 a.m. to serve the arrest warrant. When one of them reached the back of the apartment, Josena opened fire, severely wounding him. Another bondsman helped drag him out while calling 911. A third bondsman stayed inside, held with Josena.

Deputies arrived and moved in with ballistic shields. They called for Josena to come out. Instead, his brother walked out, and deputies handcuffed him before realizing quickly he was not the suspect.

That is when deputies started down the hallway toward the apartment and took gunfire.

The rounds deflected off the shield deputies were carrying. Two deputies were hit by projectiles but suffered only minor injuries, according to Nocco. No deputies fired their weapons at any point during the response, he said.

Deputies then held their position and made contact with the bondsman still inside, who told them he was not being harmed. Deputies deployed pepperball gas into the apartment and heard coughing, then silence. A drone was sent in, and deputies found Josena on the floor. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators later found shotguns, rifles and handguns inside the unit.

The severely injured bondsman was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The two other bondsmen and the two injured deputies were able to go home. Nocco said the outcome could have been far worse.

"It just shows the hard work and dedication of the deputies," Nocco said. "They did an unbelievable job."

He added that Josena made his own choices that led to the standoff, from skipping his court date to opening fire on the bondsmen and deputies who came to arrest him.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office has not released bodyworn camera footage from the scene, and investigators have not said how many rounds were fired during the encounter. The incident remains under investigation.

For residents at the Enclave at Wesley Chapel and nearby neighborhoods, the sheriff's office has not indicated any ongoing threat to the public following the standoff.
