New Free App Wipes Out $3.50 Lunch Fees for Wesley Chapel School Families

Pasco County Schools has stopped charging families a $3.50 fee every time they add money to a child's school lunch account. The fee disappeared when the district's new free app, Pasco One, went live districtwide on Aug. 13, the first day of the 2026-27 school year, replacing the third-party service MySchoolBucks at every school in the county, including those serving Wesley Chapel.

For a Wesley Chapel household with three kids who load lunch money once a week, that fee added up fast. School board member Jessica Wright, who represents the area and pushed for the change, put a number on it in an interview this month: about $42 a month, or roughly enough to cover 13 school lunches, gone simply because parents were paying to load their own money onto an account.

How the fee worked, and why it grew

MySchoolBucks charged $3.50 per transaction, per child, whenever a parent deposited funds. Families with more than one student paid that fee multiple times over, and the ones who could least afford to add money in large, infrequent lump sums, paycheck-to-paycheck households loading small amounts weekly, ended up paying the most in fees over the course of a year.

Wright, a high school social studies teacher, first raised the idea of dropping MySchoolBucks in January after parents kept bringing it up. District staff spent the months since then building the fix directly into Pasco One, the app that used to be known as MyStudent. Money loaded through the app's new ONE Wallet feature now carries no transaction fee at all.

Pasco One does more than handle lunch money. It consolidates grades, attendance, bus routes, school schedules and payment forms into a single login, so parents are not juggling separate apps and websites for every task. Superintendent John Legg has said Pasco is one of a small number of Florida districts building and running its own all-in-one parent app rather than relying on outside vendors.

School board Chair Colleen Beaudoin called it a genuinely useful tool for families and said she was glad the district timed the rollout to the start of the school year instead of dropping it on parents mid-semester. District officials say feedback since the launch has been largely positive, though they acknowledge there will likely be occasional glitches as the system settles in.

Not every school charges for lunch at all

Meal costs at Pasco schools still vary. Some schools continue to provide free meals to every student under federal programs, while others charge on a sliding scale based on household income after last year's federal cuts to some food-assistance programs ended universal free meals districtwide. Pasco One does not change who qualifies for free or reduced meals. It changes only how much it costs to put money into an account once a family owes something.

Parents who have not switched over yet can search "Pasco County Schools parent app" in the Apple App Store or Google Play and log in with their existing ParentVUE credentials. Families without an account can set one up through the district's Parent Portal. The district has not said whether any further features are planned for the app this school year, but officials have indicated they expect to keep refining it based on parent feedback.
