Wright's Gourmet House, the South Tampa sandwich and bakery institution that's been slicing pumpernickel since the 1960s, is building a new location on State Road 56 in Wesley Chapel, part of Wiregrass Ranch's next wave of retail construction. Local business coverage puts the target opening at summer 2028, and site work is already underway.

The new outpost will sit near Culver's and Cooper's Hawk, in a stretch of Wiregrass Ranch that developer JD Porter has steered away from chain fast food toward higher-end, name-brand concepts. Wright's location is planned at roughly 15,000 square feet, big enough to hold a café, a catering facility, a market with grab-and-go cases, and an espresso bar, according to local business reports.

That's a full-service build, not a satellite counter. For comparison, Wright's is also opening a second suburban location in Brandon at the same size, with that store slated to open about a year earlier, in summer 2027.

What's Changed Since the Sale

Wright's has been a South Tampa fixture since 1963, known for oversized sandwiches like the Beef Martini and the Golden Gate, plus its layered custom cakes. The shop was sold in 2024 to the Caspers Company, the hospitality group behind Oxford Exchange, Casa Cami and The Current hotel in Tampa. Since the sale, the company has moved to grow the brand well beyond its original Dale Mabry Highway storefront, including a satellite café at Tampa General Hospital's Davis Islands campus earlier this year.

The Wesley Chapel and Brandon locations mark the first time Wright's has expanded into the suburbs at this scale, both planned as full cafés with catering and retail components rather than smaller express outposts.

Key Facts
  • Location: Wiregrass Ranch, State Road 56, near Culver's and Cooper's Hawk
  • Size: approximately 15,000 square feet
  • Planned features: café, catering facility, market, espresso bar, grab-and-go
  • Target opening: Summer 2028
  • Owner: Caspers Company, which bought Wright's in 2024

No exact opening date has been set, and neither Wright's nor the county has released a construction timeline beyond the summer 2028 target. What's confirmed is that this is part of a broader build-out along that corridor of Wiregrass Ranch, where several other retail and grocery projects are also moving through the permitting and construction process.

For now, Wesley Chapel diners hoping for a Beef Martini closer to home will have a couple of years to wait. We'll keep tracking permits and construction progress on the site as the project moves forward.
