West Nile Confirmed in Wesley Chapel Area

West Nile virus has been confirmed in sentinel chickens in the south-central part of Pasco County, the section of the county that includes Wesley Chapel, and the health department's advisory is still in effect as roughly every family here sends kids back to a bus stop Thursday morning. The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County issued the mosquito-borne illness advisory on July 30 after several of the birds tested positive. No human cases have been reported in Pasco.

Adriane Rogers, executive director of the Pasco County Mosquito Control District, said the positive chickens were at two locations near the south-central part of the county, and that crews had already been running increased surveillance and very targeted control applications in the affected areas for two weeks before the advisory came out. The district does not wait for the health department to act. Treatments have included both ground and aerial applications.

The timing is the part that matters for local families. Pasco County Schools' first day is Thursday, Aug. 13. Elementary and middle schoolers will be standing at corners around Meadow Pointe, Seven Oaks, Watergrass and Epperson before the sun is fully up, and fall sports practices run right into dusk. Those two windows, dawn and dusk, are when the mosquitoes that carry West Nile bite hardest. Add the retention ponds and conservation strips that back onto half the subdivisions in Wesley Chapel and you have the exact conditions the advisory is written for.

Why there are so many mosquitoes right now

Rogers tied the elevated numbers to a one-two punch of weather. Mosquitoes lay eggs during dry stretches, and depending on the species those eggs can sit dormant for months or even years. Once the summer rain finally floods them, they hatch off all at once. Pasco went through a dry spring before the rainy season arrived, so a lot of eggs were waiting.

More mosquitoes means more chances for the virus to move. Rogers said the detection itself is a sign the monitoring system worked the way it is supposed to: the sentinel chickens are tested weekly, and the birds flagged the virus before any person got sick. She also said this is not cause for panic, and that the value of an advisory is awareness.

What the state numbers show

Pasco has now been added to the state's mosquito-borne illness advisory list alongside Alachua and Miami-Dade counties. The state health department's arbovirus report covering July 12 through 18 counted one human case and 11 positive sentinel chickens across eight Florida counties for the year. The following report, for the week ending Aug. 1, logged 10 more positive chickens in six counties including Pasco, bringing the state's 2026 total to 25 birds in 11 counties. Animal cases of eastern equine encephalitis have been reported in 11 counties this year.

The part you can actually do something about

Everything the health department is asking for is free and takes about ten minutes on a Saturday. Standing water is the whole ballgame: a mosquito needs very little of it, and a forgotten saucer under a potted plant will do.

For skin, use an insect repellent registered with the EPA and follow the label. DEET, picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus all qualify. Long sleeves and pants help when the weather allows, which in August it mostly does not, so repellent before the walk to the bus is the realistic version. Check that window and door screens are intact.

Residents who are seeing a heavy jump in mosquito activity in their neighborhood can file a service request with the Pasco County Mosquito Control District at no charge. The district's site also posts recent treatment areas and runs a treatment notification system; the office number for questions about it is 727-376-4568. The full DOH-Pasco advisory lists the prevention guidance in one place.

Neither the health department nor the district has said how long the advisory will stay up. It typically comes down when surveillance stops showing virus activity, and the chickens are sampled every week, so the next few rounds of results will decide it. The mosquito control district's board meets Aug. 18.
