Pasco's Back-to-School Bus Hotline Opens Monday, Three Days Before the First Bell

Pasco County Schools opens its extended back-to-school transportation call center Monday, Aug. 10, three days before students return Thursday, Aug. 13, and it is the fastest way for a Wesley Chapel parent to find out where the bus stops and when. The extended hours run through Aug. 19, covering the first day and the week that follows, when routes get adjusted and stop times shift.

The call center takes calls from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., then closes midday and reopens from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Three numbers ring into the same operation: 813-794-2500, 727-774-2500 and 352-524-2500.

Outside that window, the district's regular transportation line is (813) 320-2562, staffed Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Find the stop before Thursday

Route and stop information for the new year is posted through the district's MyBusPlanner site, typically by mid-August. Bus pass information for individual students runs through the myStudent parent portal. If a stop looks wrong, or a child is newly zoned after a move within Meadow Pointe, Seven Oaks or the Epperson and Watergrass corridor, the morning block of the hotline is the one to use. That is when dispatchers are actually watching buses run.

The scale here is worth understanding when you are on hold. Pasco transports more than 45,000 students daily across a county of 868 square miles, out of six bus compounds, for more than 8 million miles a year.

The first week is also the week the car lines are worst. Wiregrass Ranch, Wesley Chapel High and Cypress Creek all feed off the same handful of arterials, and a family that gives up on an uncertain bus stop and drives instead adds to that. Getting the stop confirmed before Thursday is the practical difference between a 10-minute pickup and a 35-minute one.

Screen-time rules start the same day

Aug. 13 is also when the district's new limits on classroom screen time take effect. Under guidance developed by a district committee, kindergarten and first grade are held to no more than 30 minutes a day of passive screen time. Grades 2 through 8 land at roughly an hour, and high school at about 90 minutes daily on average. District officials have framed the goal as cutting passive time in front of a device in favor of problem solving, collaboration and original work.

These are limits handed down to schools rather than a student conduct rule, and the district has not publicly spelled out how compliance gets tracked. Separately, students in pre-K through fifth grade must keep wireless devices silent and out of view during the school day unless a teacher authorizes use for a specific lesson.

Then the road work starts

Less than two weeks into the year, the commute changes. FDOT's $19.8 million resurfacing of SR 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard is scheduled to begin Aug. 25 and run into fall 2027. The work covers SR 56 from west of Bruce B. Downs to east of Meadow Pointe Boulevard, and Bruce B. Downs from SR 56 north to SR 54: 7.3 miles combined, built by Preferred Materials under a single contract.

It is not only repaving. The project includes safety improvements at the SR 56 and Bruce B. Downs intersection, signal upgrades, overhead lighting, ADA work and drainage. It also reworks the merge near Meadow Pointe Boulevard and SR 56 into two 12-foot lanes to handle the left turns there. FDOT has not posted any closures for the project yet. Details are on the state's project page, which also offers email alerts for closures once they start.

Pasco's return is the latest among Tampa Bay districts this year, after the state moved the earliest allowable start to Aug. 10. The School Board meets Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 9:30 a.m. in the Board room at Building 3 in Land O' Lakes, the last regular meeting before students walk in.
