Overnight Closures Hit Bruce B. Downs Boulevard This Week as $19.8M Repaving Continues

Drivers on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard will hit nightly lane closures through Thursday as the Florida Department of Transportation keeps grinding through its $19.8 million resurfacing of two of Wesley Chapel's busiest roads. From 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27 through Thursday, Oct. 1, crews will close lanes on Bruce B. Downs from about 1.5 miles north of State Road 56 down to Landry Lane, and shut the northbound right-turn lane approaching the SR 56 intersection. Drivers making that right turn will need to use the through lane instead.

The closures are the latest phase of a project that has been reshaping the corridor since construction began in late August. FDOT and contractor Preferred Materials, Inc. are milling and resurfacing 7.3 miles of pavement across two connected job sites: SR 56 from west of Bruce B. Downs to Meadow Pointe Boulevard, and Bruce B. Downs itself from SR 56 north to just south of SR 54/Wesley Chapel Boulevard. FDOT lists the projects under IDs 449169-1-52-01 and 449170-1-52-01, with work expected to wrap up in fall 2027.

For a corridor that carries school traffic, shopping center commuters and daily I-75 connections, that is more than a year of nights to plan around.

What's changing beyond the pavement

This isn't just a repave. FDOT is reconfiguring the Meadow Pointe Boulevard merge onto SR 56 into two 12-foot lanes, aimed at easing the backups that build during heavy left-turn periods. The SR 56/Bruce B. Downs intersection is also getting safety and ADA upgrades, drainage work, signal upgrades and new overhead lighting.

Closures are scheduled week to week and depend on weather, so the specific stretch and hours can shift as the project moves along the corridor. FDOT posts updated nightly closure listings on its lane closures page, which is the most reliable way to check before a late drive home from Wiregrass or a school event near Meadow Pointe.

The agency has not said which segment gets closed next after this week, only that work will continue moving along both roads through next fall. Drivers who use Bruce B. Downs or SR 56 after dark should expect this pattern, on-and-off overnight lane reductions, to be part of the drive for a while yet.
