SHOPS AT WIREGRASS - J.C. Penney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization Friday, citing the coronavirus pandemic as the driving reason. Struggling retail giant J.C. Penney Co. plans to close about 242 stores as part of its bankruptcy restructuring, the company said in a recent federal filing.
“The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for our families, our loved ones, our communities and our country," CEO Jill Soltau said in a written statement to the Securities an Exchange Commission. “As a result, the American retail industry has experienced a profoundly different new reality, requiring JCPenney to make difficult decisions in running our business to protect the safety of our associates and customers and the future of our company.”
