I-75 Southbound Shut Down at State Road 56 in Wesley Chapel a for a Fatal Crash Investigation
Southbound I-75 was closed near the State Road 56 interchange Saturday night, with all traffic forced off the highway and heavy delays reported across the area. Key details, including reports of a fatality, remain unconfirmed by officials.
Southbound Interstate 75 was shut down near the State Road 56 interchange in Wesley Chapel late Saturday, with emergency crews working a large crash scene and all traffic being diverted off the highway, according to reports from motorists in the area. As of about 9 p.m. on July 12, drivers described all southbound lanes blocked and traffic funneling onto SR 56 at the off-ramp — a bottleneck that was backing up local roads well beyond the interchange.
The closure hits one of Wesley Chapel's busiest chokepoints. The I-75 and SR 56 interchange feeds the Wiregrass area, and traffic pushed onto SR 56 was creating significant delays on that road as well, according to reports. Drivers were being urged to avoid the SR 56 at I-75 area entirely or to build in extra time.
Avoid the area: If you can, stay off southbound I-75 near State Road 56 and expect knock-on delays on SR 56 itself. Seek an alternate route and allow extra travel time until crews clear the scene.
What is confirmed — and what isn't
At this stage, details are limited. Live traffic cameras and motorist reports showed a heavy emergency presence and an active investigation at the scene, consistent with a serious crash and a full lane closure. The Florida Highway Patrol had not released additional official details as of Saturday night.
There were unconfirmed reports circulating locally that the crash was fatal and that a Road Ranger — the state's roadside assistance service that helps stranded drivers and manages incident scenes — may have been struck by another motorist. Those specifics have not been confirmed by FHP or any official source, and this report should be treated as developing. We will update this story as verified information becomes available.
Florida's Move Over law requires drivers to move out of the lane closest to any stopped emergency, utility, or Road Ranger vehicle when safe to do so, or slow well below the posted speed if you can't change lanes. Roadside workers face serious danger from passing traffic — give them room.
