All northbound lanes of Interstate 75 are blocked near State Road 54 (Wesley Chapel Boulevard) after a crash involving a semi hauling an oversized load, forcing traffic off the highway and snarling local roads.
Drivers in and around Wesley Chapel should steer clear of Interstate 75 northbound this morning. All northbound lanes are blocked near State Road 54 (Wesley Chapel Boulevard) after a crash involving a semi-truck hauling an oversized load, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The closure is sending the bulk of I-75 north traffic off the interstate and onto local roads, where backups are building fast.
Active closure: I-75 northbound is blocked at approximately mile marker 280, near the State Road 54 / Wesley Chapel Boulevard interchange. Avoid the area and seek an alternate route. Information is live as of Saturday, June 27, around 10:20 a.m.
What we know right now
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a large semi carrying an oversized load was involved in a crash that is blocking all northbound lanes of I-75. With the highway shut down, the majority of northbound traffic is being forced off at State Road 54 (Wesley Chapel Boulevard) — a route that funnels vehicles directly into one of the busiest commercial stretches in Wesley Chapel.
The result is significant congestion on and around SR 54, including the shopping and dining corridors near the interchange. Residents are advised to avoid the area entirely if possible until the scene clears.

Why this hits Wesley Chapel so hard
The State Road 54 / Wesley Chapel Boulevard interchange (Exit 279) is the gateway to much of the community's retail and restaurant traffic. When northbound I-75 is forced off here, drivers spill onto SR 54 and the surrounding network of local streets all at once. Past closures at this same stretch have created miles of backup and gridlock that ripple into nearby neighborhoods and parking lots, so even a short trip across town can take far longer than usual while the lanes are blocked.
If you must travel north, drivers often use parallel surface roads such as U.S. 41 (Land O' Lakes Blvd.) or Bruce B. Downs Boulevard to get around the I-75 closure. Expect heavier-than-normal volume on any alternate, and build in extra time. The fastest move is often simply to delay non-essential trips until the interstate reopens.
How long until it clears?
There is no confirmed reopening time. Crashes involving oversized loads can take longer to clear than a typical wreck, because removing the load and the truck — and inspecting the roadway — adds steps before lanes can reopen. The Florida Highway Patrol had not released additional details, including whether anyone was injured, as of this writing.
We will update this story as the Florida Highway Patrol releases more information and as lanes reopen.
