Drivers in and around Wesley Chapel should steer clear of Interstate 75 northbound this morning. Why this hits Wesley Chapel so hard
The State Road 54 / Wesley Chapel Boulevard interchange (Exit 279) is the gateway to much of the community's retail and restaurant traffic. When northbound I-75 is forced off here, drivers spill onto SR 54 and the surrounding network of local streets all at once. Past closures at this same stretch have created miles of backup and gridlock that ripple into nearby neighborhoods and parking lots, so even a short trip across town can take far longer than usual while the lanes are blocked.
If you must travel north, drivers often use parallel surface roads such as U.S. 41 (Land O' Lakes Blvd.) or Bruce B. Downs Boulevard to get around the I-75 closure. Expect heavier-than-normal volume on any alternate, and build in extra time. The fastest move is often simply to delay non-essential trips until the interstate reopens.
