Former Olympus Pools Owner Found Guilty on 35 Fraud Charges

A jury has found James Staten, the former owner of Olympus Pools, guilty on 35 of 36 counts related to defrauding customers, concluding a trial that highlighted widespread financial misconduct. The verdict came after only a few hours of deliberation on Friday. Staten now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Prosecutors argued that Staten knowingly took money from customers for pool construction projects he had no intention of completing, leaving many with unfinished or non-existent pools. During closing arguments, the Assistant State Attorney described Staten’s actions as fueled by “insatiable greed,” emphasizing that he misused approximately $1.5 million in customer funds to finance a luxurious lifestyle.

“He kept selling pools while fully aware that the money wasn’t there,” the prosecutor stated. “It was flowing through his hands like water.”

Staten’s defense, led by attorney Dino Michaels, maintained that his client’s actions were the result of poor business planning rather than fraud. Michaels argued that Olympus Pools expanded too quickly, overwhelming Staten and his ability to manage operations.

“If you have a business plan, that’s just not a scheme to defraud. It’s a business plan,” Michaels told jurors, suggesting that Staten’s downfall stemmed from mismanagement rather than criminal intent.

Olympus Pools built numerous pools throughout Wesley Chapel, Land O’ Lakes, and the New Tampa area. Wesley Chapel, which is also in Pasco County, saw several residents impacted by Staten’s business practices. One affected resident, Man Lam, paid $54,000 for an unfinished pool, which has since raised concerns about his home’s foundation. The company’s operations along State Road 54, which runs through Wesley Chapel, indicate that other local homeowners may have also been affected.

With his bond revoked, Staten remains in custody. His sentencing is scheduled for May 7 at 3 p.m.
