FDOT Begins $19.8 Million Repaving of SR 56, Bruce B. Downs Through Wesley Chapel

Construction crews are now milling and repaving 7.3 miles of two of Wesley Chapel's busiest roads, and drivers should expect nightly lane closures through Labor Day week and periodically for the next year. The Florida Department of Transportation confirmed the $19.8 million project started August 24, covering SR 56 from just west of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard to Meadow Pointe Boulevard, and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard/CR 581 from SR 56 south to just past CR 54/Wesley Chapel Boulevard.

The contractor, Preferred Materials, Inc., is expected to finish by fall 2027. That is more than a year of intermittent overnight work on two corridors that carry heavy commuter, school and shopping traffic every day.

What's closing this week

FDOT has already scheduled the first extended closure. Bruce B. Downs Boulevard from SR 56 to Landry Lane will see nightly lane closures Sunday, August 30 through Thursday, September 3, from 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. That stretch overlaps with a shorter closure FDOT ran earlier in the week, from SR 56 to just south of Chancey Road/Mystic Oak Boulevard, on the nights of August 25 through 27.

Closures are described as weather permitting, so a stalled front or heavy rain could push a night's work to the next available window.

More than a fresh coat of asphalt

FDOT says the work goes beyond milling and repaving. Near the SR 56/Meadow Pointe Boulevard intersection, crews will rework the merge area and roadway transitions to create two 12-foot lanes that can handle left-turn movements without backing traffic up onto SR 56. That intersection has long been a pinch point for anyone turning into or out of Meadow Pointe during peak hours.

At SR 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, the project adds intersection safety upgrades, ADA improvements, minor drainage work, traffic signal upgrades and new overhead lighting. Together, the two roadways being resurfaced form a rough L-shape through the heart of Wesley Chapel, touching neighborhoods and schools on both sides of I-75.

What drivers should do

FDOT is posting updated closure schedules on its project page as work progresses, since exact nights and segments shift week to week depending on weather and construction sequencing. Residents who want advance notice of closures near their commute can sign up for project email alerts through FDOT's Tampa Bay project site.

FDOT has not yet published a full closure calendar covering the entire fall and winter, so residents planning night trips through the corridor should check for updates as each week approaches.
