Low-Flying Planes Conduct Mosquito Spraying in Pasco County After Hurricane Milton

In the wake of Hurricane Milton, Pasco County, including the Wesley Chapel area, is experiencing a significant surge in mosquito populations due to widespread flooding. To combat this issue, local officials, in collaboration with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, has scheduled aerial mosquito spraying across the county. The operations will occur from dusk until dawn, approximately 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., to minimize exposure while most residents are indoors.

Residents Concerned About Low-Flying Aircraft

Many Wesley Chapel residents have reported concerns about low-flying aircraft operating in the middle of the night. Unlike the familiar orange mosquito control helicopters, these planes are flying as low as a few hundred feet above the ground to effectively apply insecticides. The unusual sight and sound of these low-altitude flights have prompted questions and unease among community members.

According to officials the low-flying planes are a necessary measure to ensure the insecticides reach mosquito breeding grounds effectively. Officials also say the substances used are approved by regulatory agencies and are deemed safe for public health and the environment when applied correctly.

What Residents Should Know:

Stay Indoors: While the spraying is safe, staying indoors during the scheduled times further minimizes any potential exposure.

Be Aware of Aircraft: Expect to see low-flying planes during the operation hours. There is no cause for alarm.

Eliminate Standing Water: Residents are encouraged to remove standing water around their homes to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

Protect Yourself: Use mosquito repellent and wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity times.

Ongoing Flooding and Development Concerns

Two weeks after Hurricane Milton, several areas in Pasco County are still dealing with unprecedented flooding. This has led many residents to question whether rapid development in the region has contributed to the slow drainage and increased flood levels.
